PUG TEENAGER

I was wondering if anyone out here has any suggestions when it comes to Mag's behavior lately with Stella?  I know she is just a puppy but I want to curb any aggression on her part so it doesn't get worse.  For instance this morning I was sitting in my chair like normal, and usually both girls sit with me and watch the morning news.  This morning Maggie jumped up on my lap but when stella tried Maggie's hair stood on end, she started to growl and wouldn't let stellie up.  I scolded her and tried to put stella up there , but Maggie kept acting out. Stella started her pug scream and basically let maggie get away with it.  I can hardly wait until she starts her puppy classes, but until then I was needing some help.  You can send me an email to simpson_long@yahoo.com if you have had any experience with this.  I did talk to the trainer and she was against spaying her next month because she said she thought it would cos more aggression, has anyone else heard of this?
P.S. Stella is doing much better, still not drinking as much but drinking more.

  1. Lily & Mimi have this relationship. Lily was the baby and then along came Mimi. Maybe she thinks that Stella recently has overtaken her "baby" position since being sick or maybe she has "claimed you" like a possession and Stella Rose is to not interfere. I hate to say it gets any better, but the fact you can read Maggie is a good thing and when I read it in Lily, I know how to tread lightly and not cause more trouble. I wish I could help you more...but I don't think her gettting spayed will cause more aggression...I never heard of that...in fact, I have heard quite the reverse...although that is usually with males.
Good Luck Miss Deb...and just love those two girls.

  3. I had some of this and what I do is I have learned to read their body language really well and if I fight is brewing I seperate. I have a gated kitchen, maybe just calmly remove one to another area. Also never ever punish a dog or growling as that is a warning. It definitely seems like they are resource guarding you. A really great book on resoure guarding is Its Mine by Patricia McConnell that book helped me more with Bob's resource guarding issues then any class I took and Ive taken quite a few. If you email me your address, my email is on my blog. I can send it to you. I have never ever heard that spaying influences aggression and Ive read a lot on dog aggression, but I do have more experience with males then females. Unfortunately what Ive read is that female female fights are always the worst.

  4. In that situation, put Maggie on the ground. The "punishment" for acting silly is NOT getting to sit in your lap. She is claiming your lap as hers and quite frankly- it's yours!
LOL. That is just a bit of the Dog Whisperer's theory. I'm not a huge fan of his but I think in this case his advice make sense.

    Good Luck!

  5. Spaying causing more aggression? Never heard of such a thing. Actually the opposite is meant to happen. I think Mags is just pushing the boundaries. The Heartbeats got it right. Your lap. Have a terrific Tuesday.

  7. I agree with Mamma Heartbeat. If Maggie kicks up a fuss, she doesn't get to sit on your lap. She has to EARN treats like that with good behavior. Search for a training technique called NILF -- "nothing in life is free." It's really helpful when bringing new dogs into a home!

  8. We are glad Stella is getting better!! But we can't give you any tips cuz me and Stanley usually get along really well. He did growl like a lion yesterday for a second but then mom yells "HEY!" and it stops and he apologizes. Sounds like Mags wants to keep you all to herself. We agree that to get the reward of your lap she needs to behave properly.

    Your Pals,

  9. Check out Mine! by Patricia B McConnell. It deals with resource guarding, which is what Maggie is doing.

  10. My mama says that putting Maggie down is a good idea, so she has to earn your lap... and I live with a resource-guarder, my big sister Lilly Ann. Sometimes I have to walk carefully around her, but my mama puts her outside if she gets too rough. We are still praying for Stellie here, we want her to be all better!

  14. Howdy All, Our Stella can be a resource guarder too especially with me or socks etc. Whatever she is guarding gets taken away immediately and if it's me she's guarding i.e. sitting at my feet and she growls at Rory I get up straight away and move away from her. It has worked and she is heaps better than when she was little. She still does it a bit but it doesn't get her anywhere at all as she loses whatever it was she was guarding. We have made vast improvements with their eating together by standing and making her know I was the boss. Now they can eat together and she makes no attempt to get Rory's food at all. Good luck. Maggie will settle down soon. How old is she now? Also I've never heard of desexing causing more aggression. Sounds a bit odd to me. I would have thought it would settle her down. Take care. No worries, and love, Carol (and Stella and Rory)

  16. We use a spray bottle with just a little bit of vinegar added to the water. They hate it when they get sprayed but it makes them stop immediately. Most of the time we just pick up the bottle and they stop - that is how much they hate being sprayed! And if that doesn't work the naughty pug gets put into time out ... which means being put into the kitchen by themselves until they calm down.

    Good Luck!!!!!

  17. Sory we are a little late to comment here but you have gotten some good advice. Never heard of the spay causing more aggression. We have issues now and then. Bailey will get jealous sometimes, we just watch for the signs. Hazel for some reason gets aggressive with Greta right after they eat dinner and Bailey will join in. So we pick Greta up as soon as she is done. When the other two are done bowls get picked up and everyone goes outside for a few minutes. This seems to help dispell the negative energy. Glad that Stella is getting better.

  18. Sorry we can't help you with this, but we hope you sort it out. We thought spaying dogs decreased aggression . . . . . .

  19. Weird, just shows how there are so many different trainers out there, as the trainer I know suggests spaying and neutering helps diminish aggression problems. Have you ever heard of thorndike's law of effect, it involves positive reinforcement, negative reinforcement, positive punishment, and negative punishment. Look that up it might help. 20. When we was pugsitting a friend's pug Doug, Bunk was a little like that. We had to keep Bunk in another room for some time unless one of us was playing with Bunk and the other was playing with Doug because Bunk would get very, very annoyed to see Doug getting attention. We did not really know what to do except that this told us Bunk was not ready to make another brother fawn pug yet. Sorry that this is not helpful, but just wanted to share out experience.

  21. I have never heard of that causing aggression, Mollie gets jealous with other dogs if you stroke them, to big for her boots..LOL It's something you are going to have to nip in the bud, as it will only get worse. How, I'm unsure to that but if you find a way, let me know..xx00xx
